Cocktail idlis are just mini idlis tossed in idli podi and ghee served as starter or snack. In few places I have seen many colored idlis arranged in skewers along with sauteed bell peppers. I always used to think toddlers and kids will be fascinated by this healthy and tasty snack. So when I made a fresh batch of idli batter yesterday I made these cute cocktail idlis and also some idli skewers.
These cocktail idlis were a super hit at our home. I planned to make three color idlis but I did not have mint or cilantro leaves even curry leaves powder handy to make green idlis. So I settled with podi idlis, lemon idli along with sauteed peppers. I highly recommend you all to try this for toddlers and kids. Healthy, filling, delicious and fun filled snack for them. Use ghee to saute the podi as the taste and flavor is brilliant.
To make cocktail idli recipe we need mini idli plates. If you do not have mini idli plates you can make regular idli, chill for few hours and cut into cubes. You can use all colored bell peppers, zucchini, paneer cubes, onion rings to make idli skewers. I made simple skewers with whatever I had handy.
Serve cocktail idli immediately once made. You can even arrange everything in a plate and have everyone make their own skewer. I used bamboo snack pickers as skewers.

Step by step cocktail idli recipe.
1. Make mini idlis using idli batter. Allow to cool for few minutes, unmould ad set aside.
2. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a kadai. Add the cubed bell peppers and a pinch of salt. Saute well till the edges wilt. Set aside.
3. To the same oil, add /4 teaspoon mustard seeds, a pinch of asafoetida and 1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder. Saute well. Switch of the flame and add 1 teaspoon lemon juice. Mix well. Add 1/2 of the prepared idlis and saute. Toss well. Remove to a plate.
4. In the same kadai add 1 tablespoon ghee. Melt it for a minute. Add 2 tablespoons idli podi. Mix well. Switch off the flame and add the remaining idlis, Toss well. You can serve these idlid as such or proceed to make skewers.
5. Rinse few snack pickers well in water.
6. Arrange the prepared bell peppers and idlis in desired pattern. Serve idli skewers immediately.

Ingredients
- 30 mini idlis
- For podi idli
- 2 tablespoons idli podi
- For lemon idlis
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Sauteed bell peppers for making skewers
Instructions
