About This Recipe
Homemade nutella recipe is nothing but chocolate flavored sweetened nut butter. While hazelnut is used in store bought ones you can easily use any nut here. I have used roasted hazelnuts for this spread. You can even use peanuts or add cocoa powder while making peanut butter. It is a great recipe that is so easy to make.
The other ingredients needed to make homemade nutella are pantry staple ones like sugar or any sweetener you prefer, a dash of olive oil or coconut oil or any vegetable oil, cocoa powder and salt. Yes. that’s all you need and a good food processor or high powdered blender.
To enhance the flavor and rich taste of this chocolate spread, you can few more ingredients like melted chocolate, few drops of hazelnut oil etc. See notes section for more on this.
For this batch of homemade version I have used 1 cup hazelnuts, raw cane sugar and pinch of sea salt.
The process of making homemade Nutella is pretty simple and consists of three steps.
- Roast the nuts
- Process the nuts until it becomes nut butter
- Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder and process again until nutella turns smooth & luscious. Your own nutella is ready 🙂
The quality and taste of this homemade chocolate spread is truly unparalleled. It is so flavorful, delicious and does not have numbing sweet taste of store bought nutella. Best part is you know exactly what are the ingredients in this spread.
You can make this spread in flat 20 minutes and it keeps well for around 10 days at room temperature and 2 weeks in refrigerator. The texture of nutella is shiny, smooth, spreadable at room temperature and thickens a bit on refrigerating.
These homemade nutella jars makes for wonderful edible gifts. Tie up pretty ribbons and these gifts will be received with loads of love 🙂

Roasting Hazelnuts
You can make this hazelnut chocolate spread either with raw hazelnuts or roasted ones. I prefer toasted hazelnuts as they increase the flavor of nutella.
To toast hazelnuts place them as single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and toast in the preheated oven for 10 minutes at 350 F or 180 C.
To remove the skin you can place the nuts in a kitchen towel and rub vigorously. Cool completely before using. You can also make nutella recipe without removing the skin of the nuts.
How To Make Nutella
Measure and add 1 cup toasted hazelnuts to a food processor jar. You can also add 1 cup of almonds or mix of hazelnut and almonds too.
Begin to process it from low speed to high speed. First powder the nuts thoroughly.
On further processing the nuts will become a thick paste by releasing natural oils.
Keep processing again on high speed and on blending it will become hazelnut butter or almond butter.
Now with the food processor running, slowly add powdered sugar, salt, cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon light olive oil or coconut oil to the nut butter. Also slowly drizzle the melted chocolate now if you are using it for making nutella.
Continue processing again in high speed for a minute or until the nutella is glossy, smooth and creamy. The texture should be similar to brownie batter.
Transfer to airtight jars or any other resealable container and store homemade nutella in refrigerator or at room temperature. This spread will thicken as it cools and will dilute a bit when left at room temperature for few minutes.
Flavor Enhancements
This homemade Nutella is delicious and flavorful as such & tastes very close to store bought Nutella. However to enhance the flavor of chocolate or hazelnut flavor or to add new dimension of flavor here are few options.
Melted Chocolate
To make this spread more chocolatey you can 1/4 cup melted chocolate. You can either chop and melt dark chocolate or use chocolate chips. Adding chocolate also makes this nutella more rich due to the cocoa butter in it which is almost absent in cocoa powder. The store bought version has more chocolate than nuts.
Melt the chocolate in microwave or on stovetop in small sauce pan over gently simmering water. You can also use 2-3 tablespoons of chocolate syrup.
Hazelnut oil
If you want to improve hazelnut flavor you can add 1/2 tablespoon hazelnut oil instead of coconut oil or olive oil.
Vanilla extract
Some times I add 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract while making nutella. It lends a wonderful varied flavor. You can also add cinnamon extract too.
Expert Tips
Choose best quality nuts– Obviously right 🙂 Hazelnuts tend to go rancid very easily so always taste few nuts before making a big batch of nutella. If you are storing a big batch of nuts, you can toast, cool and store in airtight container.
Toasting hazelnuts is optional but I totally recommend it. Toasting the nuts helps in releasing the essential oils and there by improves the flavor.
Use a good food processor to make homemade nutella. If it is not available you can use a high powered blender but make sure it can withstand the whole process. You can even use a spice grinder to first powder the nuts and then use a blender. If the blender heats up, let cool for few minutes and blend at intervals. You may need 1 tablespoon more oil if using a blender.
Sweetener– You can use any sweetener of your choice in this recipe. I have used powdered cane sugar but you can use coconut sugar, powdered palm sugar too.
Scaling Up– You can easily double or halve the recipe.
Uses Of Homemade Nutella
Your jar of nutella from your very own pantry can be used for all the recipes that call for regular nutella. Apart from slathering on toast or having it as such by spoonful’s of course 🙂 Here are some ideas incase you need them to use this lovely spread.
Make a cozy mug of nutella hot chocolate or use this chocolate spread while making chocolate mocha or spiced hot chocolate.
Drizzle over eggless pancakes, waffle or milk toast.
Toast a slice a bread and slather a thick later of Nutella on it. Place sliced bananas or caramelized bananas and enjoy breakfast or sweet snacks. It makes for a great after school snack too.
Make a delicious cake frosting by combining 1/4 cup nutella, 1 tablespoon soft butter and beat in medium speed in your stand mixer or electric beater. Add 3 tablespoons powdered sugar and mix well. spread over cake and enjoy.
