Vella kozhukattai or modak is the important dish made as offering for vinayaka chaturthi. Sweet filling made of coconut and jaggery is stuffed inside rice flour dough, then the sealed dumpling is steamed. Very healthy and delicious snack that even toddlers and kids can enjoy.
I made this modak recipe to share here for Ganesh chaturthi as requested by few readers.
To make modak recipe I have again used kozhukattai flour bought from store, but if you want to make as offering you can use homemade rice flour too. It is best to use freshly grated coconut that is not very tender to avoid the poornam getting very pasty. You can use a steamer to steam modak or an idli plate as I did.

Modak recipe or vella kozhukattai recipe with step by step recipes.
1. Add 1/4 cup water to grated jaggery and boil. Boil very well till the jaggery dissolves and thicken well. No need to check for string consistency, just a thick jaggery syrup. Filter the syrup.
2. Dry roast the grated coconut for few minutes. Add the filtered syrup and mix well. The mixture should not be very running. You should be able to form a loose ball with the mixture. The jaggery syrup should be thick enough. Divide the poornam into 6-7 equal portions and set aside.
3. In the meanwhile boil around 1 cup water. It should boil vigorously.
4. Take the rice flour in a mixing bowl. Add salt, oil and mix well. Add the hot water little by little and mix well with a spoon. Allow to cool for few minutes.
5. Knead to a smooth dough. Divide the dough into 6-7 equal sized balls.
6. Apply oil in your palms and take one dough ball. Shape it like a shallow cup and place one poornam. Cover from all sides and seal. Repeat the same with remaining dough.
7. Steam the prepared modak in a steamer or idli plate for 10-12 minutes. The modak will be shiny and non sticky once done. Serve modak hot or warm.

- For outer cover:
- 1/2 cup rice flour/kozhukattai flour

- Salt
- ¼ teaspoon oil
- For filling/poornam

- 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder.

2.Keep the dough covered until use.
3. If the pooran is very watery you can add 1/2 teaspoon rice flour and mix well.
