Navaratri recipes 2104-here in this post I have compiled some recipes for navaratri 2014 that starts on 25 September and it is celebrated till 3rd October, October 2nd is sarawathi poojai and 3rd being Vijaya dasami. Navaratri is a very important festival celebrated with great zeal throughout India. Each part of India has its own way of celebrating the festival, while in North India, the more emphasis is on fasting and devotion,in south India ,in Tamil nadu, these 10 days are the most joyous and colorful with many homes keeping golu and all dressed up pretty.I still remember as kids, during navratri we used to get dressed up as if we are going for some fancy dress competition (radha and krishna makeover would be predominant 🙂 )and go to all the houses in the street,no one bothered for an invitation and no one in any home will turn us away too. There is custom of singing some song,if you are invited to see golu in any house, and we kids used to practice in the morning and still go and shout as we pleased,we never bothered about our voice or the song. All we wanted were sundal :). Yes like these days we won’t get any fancy gifts n all,in some homes they will give a small comb and mirror along with sundal, that too only for girls :). We used to go to all the houses, all the 9 days and sing the same song 😛 :P. When I think now,it feels really funny and I wonder will children of these days would do that. Thankfully after marriage also I am able to keep golu as my in laws home has that tradition. I simply love buying new dolls for each golu and try my best to keep a nice attractive golu. Apart from keeping golu and all fun,Navaratri is the festival for the Goddess Shakthi and celebrating the three forms of Shakthi. 3 days each are to worship Lakshmi, saraswathi and Parvathi, the Goddess of prosperity, knowledge and power respectively. The 10th day Vijayadsamai/Dushhera is an auspicious day when the Goddess demolished a demon and any good thing started on this day will be successful (Like kids are sent to school, learning a new form of art ) etc. Again when we were kids,on the 9th day, saraswathi pooja,we would keep al out txet books, notebooks everything before golu and worship with flowers and we were not supposed to study/read/write anything that day,but funnily,I will be happy that we don’t have to study and at the same time, it will be itching a lot for me to read on that particular day,I will be roaming around and escape from studying the whole year, but feel as if my hands were tied on that particular day alone :P,how many of you have felt tat way???. On Vijayadasami, the first thing we have to do after taking bath is to do punar poojai (offer flowers again to the text books) and sit and study for 1 whole hour.Do I need to say that was not of great fun :P. Since I have written about navaratri tarditions and celebrations last year,I thought of telling you all some fond memories,I will stop my ramblings here and proceed with recipes 🙂
Here In Tamil nadu,in most of the homes,a sweet is prepared in the morning for offering and a sundal is prepared in the evening. So I have compiled a list of recipes for these both here.Apart from that on 9th and 10th day a full festive spread is prepared,I have compiled that also.If you are looking for any particular recipe, please write to me and I shall try my best to blog about it.
Here is wishing you all a very happy, prosperous and eventful navaratri, may Goddess Shakthi demolish all evils and bring in happiness, good health and wisdom in all of us 🙂 🙂 🙂
