This week we will go a little away from Tamil nadu and feast up on rava idly of Karnataka for south Indian breakfast trail#3.When I planned this series I had a set of ever famous breakfasts in mind and rava idly was one of them. Rava idly is an instant version of normal rice idly, unlike rice idly this rava idly does not require any fermentation, sour curd is used for fermentation instantly here.Read some interesting facts about rava idly here.Let’s enter the trail 🙂
This week I made this break fast platter-rava idly, kothumalli chutney and milagai podi(gun powder). Rava idly is quite filling, calorie rich food which is good for growing kids and also keeps us full for long time. Here is the recipe for rava idly.
This is an integral part of breakfast in Tamil homes.Personally I swear up on gun powder compared to any chutney/sambar.Gun powder with sesame oil is an unbeatable combination :). Here are two versions of gun powder we use
1.Milagai podi with nuts
2.Ellu milagai podi
Kothumalli means cilantro leaves in Tamil and a very fragrant chutney with these leaves makes an awesome combo with rava idly.
1/2 cup cilantro leaves packed
2 tablespoons shredded coconut
2 green chillies slit
2 tablespoons gram dal
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
Oil to temper
1.Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a small kadai and fry gram dal till golden.Fry green chillies and asafoetida i the same pan.
2.Grind the fried ingredients to a smooth paste along with cilantro, salt and coconut.Add little water to bring to a smooth consistency.Temper with mustard and curry leaves.
3.Serve with rava idly.
1.Coconut is optional.
2.If not using coconut, just fry asafoetida and green chilli, grind 2 tablespoons roasted dal along with cilantro.
