Star ingredients:Toor dal(pigeon peas) and tomatoes
1 cup toor dal
2 large tomatoes
2 green chillies
1 red chilli
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon asafoetida
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 small piece of ginger
10-12 curry leaves
Cilantro for garnishing
1.Pressure cook toor dal up tp 4 whistles.It should be soft and mushy
2.Chop the tomatoes finely.
3.In a kadai heat some oil and add all the ingredients from green chillies through ginger and temper.
4.Add the chopped tomatoes and saute for 5-7 minutes.
5.Add the mashed dal/1/2 cup water,salt and mix well.Let it boil for 7-10 minutes.
6.Garnish with cilantro and serve hot with steamed rice.
1.You can add onions along with tomatoes
2.Instead of asafoetida add 3-4 gralic cloves while tempering
3.You can puree the tomatoes for a smooth gravy.
